Events that took place during the Savior’s final week of mortality

Day 1
Jesus arrived in Jerusalem and was welcomed as the blessed Son of David.
Day 2
Jesus went to the temple and challenged the Jewish leaders about their temple worship and how they had defiled the temple by making it a place of worldly gain.
Day 3
Jesus’ discussion with the Jewish leaders continues and when they feel they have lost the upper hand they begin to plot how to kill him. However, one of Jesus’ own disciples offers to betray him.
Day 4
There is not much about the happenings of this day, but Jesus knew of the plot of his death.
Day 5
Jesus introduced the sacrament and prophesied of his death and who would betray him. Jesus led his disciples (now 11) to Gethsemane where he went off to pray. He was brought to trial that night.
Day 6
The Jewish leaders strive to find guilt in Christ and sentence him to death without causing an uprising against them. He was crucified that night, but the Jewish leaders didn’t want the body to still be displayed during the Passover the next day. So he was buried that night and sealed in a tomb by two of his disciples.
Day 7 (Sabbath)
“This was the Jewish Sabbath. Jesus’ body remained in the tomb, but in spirit he ministered in the realm of departed spirits.”
Day of the Resurrection
Jesus was risen and seen by many witness, including Mary.

Choice 2: Matthew 17:14–21. The Savior Healed a Young Man

1.    Review Matthew 17:14–21, and list three things the Savior said were needed for the disciples to heal the man.
  • faith
  • prayer
  • fasting

2.    Read each of the following references. Next to the reference, write what it teaches about what is needed for miracles to happen.
  • 3 Nephi 18:20 - We are taught to pray as a family unto the Father in the name of Jesus Christ that you may be blessed.
  • Doctrine and Covenants 50:29 - We must be be clean of the body and the spirit from all sin, and ask in the name of Christ.
  • Doctrine and Covenants 42:48 - We must have faith.
All of these scriptures point out that miracles can happen, but it is based on our faith and our preparation. Jesus Christ and his disciples have the power of the priesthood and can give us amazing blessings, but it is up to us whether or not we receive those blessings. We have to be in the right state of mind and body, we must be clean and have faith that the priesthood has the ability to make miracles happen.

Choice 3: Matthew 14:22-33. Walking on the Sea

1. What was the reaction on the disciples when they first saw the Savior walking on the water towards them?
At first the disciples saw Christ walking on water and we frightened because they thought it was a spirit.
2. What did Peter's response indicate about him?
Peter responded that if it was Him that Christ would make it possible for him to come unto him and walk on the water. This shows Peter's faith in Christ's abilities to perform miracles and his trust in the Lord.
3. According to Matthew 14:30, why did Peter begin to sink?
Peter started to sin because he was frightened by how rough the water and wind were.
4. What did Peter do when he began to sink? What word in the verse describes the expediency or timing when Jesus responded to Peter's request?
When Peter began to sink he called out for Jesus Christ's help and immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand and caught him.
5. Read Doctrine and Covenants 88:67. Write a paragraph about what principle in this verse relates to what Peter did to successfully walk on water. How can this same principle apply to your life to assist you in walking over the storms of life?
In this scripture we are taught to be filled with the light and if we are dedicated to Christ and to the work of the Lord we will have this light within us. When Peter asked Christ to allow him to walk on water he had that faith and dedication to Christ. He believed in Christ's abilities and knew that through the power of the priesthood he could receive any righteous desire. As we struggle in our own lives we can remember to have the dedication to the Lords work and that if we are filled with that light and that love it will help us through the storms. If we remember to follow the gospel and magnify our callings we will have the light of the Lord to help us understand and handle difficult situations.

Choice 1: Matthew 5:1-12. The Beatitudes.

  • Blessed or Blessedness: When we are blessed we receive gifts from the Spirit and from God. Many people think of happiness as the feeling you get from doing things or getting things (usually from a secular or worldly standpoint) but blessedness is much more then happiness because it is eternal and from our Heavenly Father. "Happiness come from without and is dependent on circumstances; blessedness is an inward fountain of joy in the soul itself, which no outward circumstance can seriously affect." (Dummelow’s Commentary)
1. Blessed Are the Poor in Spirit
2. Blessed Are They That Mourn: Often times it may seem like morning is something people do when they are sad, usually because of the loss of a loved one. However, when Jesus says 'blessed are they that mourn' he is talking about a different feeling. In order to truly repent of our sins we must mourn them with godly sorrow. In order for us to fully repent and receive forgiveness of our sins we must be mournful of them and make sure that we never repeat them. I know that as I feel the Spirit and have those feelings of godly sorrow for my sins, only then will I be able to receive the fully blessings of repentance.
3. Blessed Are the Meek
4. Blessed Are They That Hunger and Thirst
After Righteousness
5. Blessed Are the Pure in Heart: Only through pure eyes will we be able to see the Lord and only with a pure heart can we completely feel His love. If you have a pure heart you are open to the ways of the Lord Jesus Christ and as you follow His was your life will be blessed. As you see the goodness of Christ you will be able to see the goodness of others. Instead of judging and focusing on negatives you can see that they too are Children of God. It it with a pure heart that we truly learn to love as the Savior loves and to share that love with everyone.
6. Blessed Are the Merciful
7. Blessed Are the Peacemakers
8. Blessed Are They Which Are Persecuted: Many have been persecuted for their beliefs and have stood by the gospel. I know that when my parents and I first decided that we were going to join the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints we weren't sure how supportive our family was going to be. Luckily for the most part our family supported us, but just said they didn't want to feel pressured to join. However, I was raised Catholic and I had a godmother who was very disappointed. She sent a letter saying how disappointed in the decision we were making and how we were turning our backs on our faith. This was a really hard thing for me because my godmother was a very important person in my life, but I had to do what I knew was right and so far I can already see the blessings I have received.

Choice 4: John 3 We Must Be Born Again

  • What is the difference between "seeing" kingdom of God and "entering" the kingdom of God?                 I don't think there is much difference between seeing and entering because in both instances Jesus states that a man must be born again. However, there may be a slight difference because seeing suggests being on the outside looking in and entering suggesting actually being apart of the kingdom of God.
  • What did Christ teach Nicodemus that he must do to enter the kingdom of God?                             Christ taught that in order to enter the kingdom of God a man must be born of water and of the Spirit.
  • What does is mean to be "born of water"?                                                                                          To be born of water mean to be baptized and repent of all our sins.
  • Read Moses 6:59 and list ways baptism is a symbol of rebirth.                                                               -being cleansed                                                                                                                                     -sanctified from all sin                                                                                                                                        -enjoy  the words of eternal life and glory
  • Read Romans 6:4 and list ways baptism can be a symbol of death.                                                          -you are buried and raised up                                                                                                                -ye should walk in newness of life
  • What does it mean to be "born of the Spirit"?                                                                                           Being born of the Spirit is done after baptism and is receiving the Gift of the Holy Ghost by the laying on of hands.
  • What natural element does the Lord compare with the Spirit? Why is it an effective comparison?         The Lord compares the Spirit to wind. This is effective because both wind and the Spirit are heard and not seen and must be carefully listened to in order to hear.
  • Review John 3:14-17, 35-36. Write a paragraph that describes who the Father loves, what he has done to show his love for his children and for Jesus Christ, what the purpose of the savior was, and what blessings will come to those who accept the Son.                                                                                   God loves the world and His only begotten Son Jesus Christ. He showed His love by giving His only begotten Son as a Savior to the world. The purpose of the Savior was to bring everlasting life and save the world. Those who accept the Son will have everlasting life and shall not perish.
